A point-to-point run on the historic Black Canyon Trail, an old livestock route through the Sonoran Desert, from Mayer to the Emery Henderson Trailhead. The course loses height overall. The first half is fast, but the second half crosses Black Canyon and the Agua Fria River many times, with rockier climbs and descents.
The course tops out at 1,280 m (low point 531 m). About 70% of the distance is gentle (under 5% grade), so there is a lot of running. The median finish was about 15 h, through one night.
