Starting in the morning at São Vicente on Madeira's north coast, the route joins the main MIUT course in the Laurisilva forest. It crosses the rocky Encumeada ridge, Curral das Freiras, Pico Ruivo and Pico do Areeiro, then descends to Machico.
The course tops out at 1,801 m (low point 0 m). There are 3 big climbs: 624 m around 0–7 km; 1,130 m around 9–17 km; 1,259 m around 24–37 km. Only about 20% is gentle (under 5% grade); most of it is climbing or descending. The median finish was about 16 h, through one night.
