A point-to-point crossing of Madeira that starts at midnight in Porto Moniz on the northwest coast and finishes in Machico on the southeast coast. It crosses the Paul da Serra plateau, the UNESCO-listed Laurisilva forest and Curral das Freiras, then goes over Pico Ruivo and Pico do Areeiro.
The course tops out at 1,847 m (low point 7 m). There are 4 big climbs: 1,195 m around 5–16 km; 1,307 m around 22–31 km; 1,151 m around 41–49 km; 1,296 m around 59–69 km. About 30% of the distance is gentle (under 5% grade). The median finish was about 25 h, through 2 nights.
