Heading east from Dajingmen in Zhangjiakou, Hebei, the route passes Ming Dynasty Great Wall ruins and beacon towers, the old Zhangku trade road, and disused military tunnels. Summits give panoramic views over Zhangjiakou, and the scenery has the feel of a frontier mountain town.
The course tops out at 1,516 m (low point 797 m). There are 4 big climbs: 341 m around 0–10 km; 349 m around 14–18 km; 613 m around 22–38 km; 360 m around 62–71 km. About 40% of the distance is gentle (under 5% grade). In 2025, 67% of starters finished. The median finish was about 21 h, through one night.
