Set in the highlands of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in East Java. The volcanic sand sea at around 2,200m is cold and windy, and the route runs rural back roads, forest and prairie with views toward Mount Semeru, Java's highest peak, and Lake Ranu Kumbolo.
The course tops out at 2,763 m (low point 1,940 m). 6 climbs of 300 m or more keep coming; the biggest is 823 m around 78–89 km. About 40% of the distance is gentle (under 5% grade). The median finish was about 28 h, through 2 nights.
