Starting before dawn from Pangururan on Samosir Island in Lake Toba, northern Sumatra, it climbs Pusuk Buhit (about 1,960 m) and links villages such as Sianjur Mulamula, Ginolat and Bonan Dolok. Rugged terrain, forest and heritage sites set in a vast volcanic caldera steeped in Batak history.
The course tops out at 1,965 m (low point 902 m). There are 4 big climbs: 635 m around 0–20 km; 1,059 m around 39–50 km; 621 m around 60–66 km; 610 m around 73–78 km. About 40% of the distance is gentle (under 5% grade). In 2026, 93% of starters finished. The median finish was about 24 h, through 2 nights.
