Also known as: JOSHU HOTAKASAN
The longest race of a mountain event centred on Mt. Hotaka, one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains. It climbs to ridges near the treeline several times and involves long hours including night. Markers about every 1 km show the distance remaining; the event grew out of a mountain race begun in 1990.
The course tops out at 2,153 m (low point 489 m). There are 3 big climbs: 1,492 m around 0–20 km; 1,149 m around 34–41 km; 677 m around 117–126 km. Only about 30% is gentle (under 5% grade); most of it is climbing or descending. In 2025, 42% of starters finished — a tough one. The median finish was about 31 h, through one night.
