Set in Kirishima's national park area, the course links mountain trails, footpaths and forest roads around Ebino Kogen, Mt. Kurino and Shiratori Onsen, giving runners a feel for the volcanic landscape of the Kirishima Geopark. It goes above 1,360 m, and poles are banned to protect the vegetation.
The course tops out at 1,361 m (low point 539 m). 5 climbs of 300 m or more keep coming; the biggest is 790 m around 49–60 km. Only about 30% is gentle (under 5% grade); most of it is climbing or descending. The median finish was about 12 h.
