The 50 km category starts and finishes at the Aspecta outdoor theater in Minamiaso, Kumamoto. It runs the southern rim of the Aso caldera in two loops via Komagaeshi Pass, Mt. Kanmuri and Mt. Oya, passing Jizo Pass three times, with about 2,500 m of climbing. It also serves as a qualifying race for the Aso Volcano Trail.
The course tops out at 1,229 m (low point 513 m). There are 2 big climbs: 672 m around 0–10 km; 716 m around 31–42 km. Only about 20% is gentle (under 5% grade); most of it is climbing or descending. In 2025, 64% of starters finished. The median finish was about 9 h.
