Starting on the approach to Nikko's World Heritage shrines and temples, the course heads to the Kirifuri Highlands: the 1,445-step Tenku Kairo stairway, the old Kirifuri pasture, a descent on a former ski slope, a stream crossing and Kanmangafuchi gorge before finishing at Smile Noguchi.
The course tops out at 1,675 m (low point 476 m). There are 4 big climbs: 342 m around 0–5 km; 347 m around 7–8 km; 861 m around 13–20 km; 498 m around 35–39 km. The longest descent drops 729 m around 20 km at about 15% on average. Only about 20% is gentle (under 5% grade); most of it is climbing or descending.
